2023 Half-Speed Master on Gold Double Vinyl

This 2023 Candlelight reissue puts Orchid, the debut Opeth album from 1995, on two gold LPs. Jens Bogren remastered it with guidance from Mikael Åkerfeldt, and Miles Showell cut it at half speed at Abbey Road Studios. Candlelight's notes give the vinyl weight as 140 grams and say Dan Capp restored the artwork to the design the band originally intended. The records come in a gatefold jacket with an obi strip, and the front sticker names the color as Gold under catalog number CANDLE333124.

The seven songs of the original album run across four sides. "In Mist She Was Standing", just over 14 minutes and the longest piece on the record, has side A to itself. "Into the Frost of Winter", the 1992 rehearsal recording added to the 2000 CD reissue, is not part of this edition.

Opeth recorded Orchid in March 1994 at the old Unisound studio in Finspång, Sweden. Dan Swanö engineered the sessions and produced and mixed the album with the band. The lineup was Åkerfeldt on vocals and guitar, Peter Lindgren on guitar, Anders Nordin on drums and Johan De Farfalla, who came in as a session bassist and then joined full time. Nordin wrote and played the piano piece "Silhouette", recorded hours before the band left the studio, and the acoustic "Requiem" was redone in Stockholm with Pontus Norgren as co-producer.

The band never made a demo. According to Katatonia's Anders Nyström, Candlelight founder Lee Barrett took notice after Emperor's Samoth put a few seconds of "The Apostle in Triumph" on a tape of unsigned bands, and Barrett offered Opeth an album. Candlelight released Orchid in Europe in 1995, and Century Black issued it in the US in 1997. The orchid on the cover was ordered from the Netherlands, and Torbjörn Ekebacke handled the photography and layout.
