Music On Vinyl 180 Gram Audiophile Black Vinyl

This is the Dutch label Music On Vinyl's edition of Ghost Reveries, catalog number MOVLP2269, on two LPs of 180 gram audiophile black vinyl. The eight songs keep their original running order at two per side, opening with "Ghost Of Perdition" on side A and closing with "Isolation Years" on side D. The label describes the album as "a culmination of everything Opeth has worked toward throughout their career."

Opeth wrote the material through 2004 and, for the first time since Still Life, had the songs finished before going into the studio, which left three weeks to rehearse. They recorded at Fascination Street Studios in Örebro, Sweden, with Jens Bogren producing, engineering and mixing. It was their first album for Roadrunner Records, signed after their European label Music For Nations closed in 2005, and the first since Still Life not produced by Steven Wilson.

Keyboardist Per Wiberg plays here as a full member for the first time, on Hammond organ, Mellotron, grand piano and Moog, and it was the last Opeth album with drummer Martin Lopez and guitarist Peter Lindgren. Mikael Åkerfeldt set out to write an occult concept piece and has said he eased off it after writing "Isolation Years". Much of the album is played in an open Dmadd9 tuning, unlike the standard tuning used across most of the band's catalog. The candle photograph on the cover is by Travis Smith.

Roadrunner released the album in Europe on August 29, 2005, and in North America the following day. It reached No. 64 on the Billboard 200 and No. 62 in the UK, and its No. 9 placing in Sweden made it the first Opeth studio album to chart there. "The Grand Conjuration" was the only single, and Gene Hoglan filled in for an ill Martin Lopez in its video. Metal Hammer named Ghost Reveries its album of 2005.
