The five-track album on a single compact disc, carrying the 2011 remaster by James Guthrie and Joel Plante at das boot recording. This barcode was first issued in 2016 under the Pink Floyd Records imprint and has since been reissued, with the same program, under Columbia and Sony Music branding. The catalog number is 88875170922.

Wish You Were Here was the band's ninth studio album. Its United States advance orders reached 900,000, the largest Columbia had taken for any release.

"Welcome to the Machine" is built on an EMS VCS 3 synthesizer, with Gilmour's acoustic guitar and percussion from Nick Mason. On June 5, 1975, while the band was mixing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," Syd Barrett arrived at the studio unannounced. Storm Thorgerson later said of the visit, "He sat round and talked for a bit but he wasn't really there."

Pink Floyd's store notes the album's place on Rolling Stone's lists of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and the 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time.
