180 Gram Stereo Remaster on Black Vinyl

This is the Pink Floyd Records pressing of The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, catalog number PFRLP1, issued in the United States on June 3, 2016. It is the stereo mix on a single 180-gram LP, made and printed in the USA and pressed at Record Technology Incorporated. The hype sticker credits the remaster, from the original analogue tapes, to James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman, with Grundman cutting the lacquers, and prints the album's original UK release month, August 1967. Vic Singh took the front cover photograph, and the rear cover design is Syd Barrett's.

The band's debut album, it is the only one Pink Floyd made under Barrett's leadership, with Barrett, Roger Waters, Richard Wright and Nick Mason. Barrett wrote all but three of the songs. Norman Smith produced the sessions at EMI Studios on Abbey Road between February and May 1967, with Peter Bown as balance engineer, and the recordings lean on plate reverb, automatic double tracking and the studio's echo chamber. The title comes from chapter seven of Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows.

EMI Columbia released the album in the UK in August 1967, and it reached No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart. In the United States, Tower issued it that October as Pink Floyd, dropping three songs and adding "See Emily Play." "Astronomy Dominé," the opening track and the audio above, and "Interstellar Overdrive" stayed in the band's live sets for years afterward. Rolling Stone placed the album at No. 253 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
