Remastered 180 Gram Vinyl in a Gatefold Jacket

Pink Floyd Records reissued Atom Heart Mother in the United States on September 23, 2016, as catalog number PFRLP5: one 180-gram LP in a gatefold jacket. For this edition James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman went back to the original analogue tapes, and Grundman cut the lacquers.

Harvest first released the album in the UK on October 2, 1970. It was Pink Floyd's first number one album there, and in the United States it peaked at number 55 and later went gold. Sessions ran at EMI Studios in London from March to July 1970, and the album was the band's first recording with an orchestra.

The title suite, heard in the video above, fills side one. Ron Geesin wrote an orchestral arrangement over the band's backing tracks for a brass section, cello and the 16-voice John Alldis Choir, which carries much of the melody, and he is credited as co-composer. The name came from an Evening Standard headline Geesin pointed out, "Atom Heart Mother Named," over a story about a woman fitted with a plutonium-powered pacemaker.

On side two, Roger Waters sings his own "If," Richard Wright his "Summer '68" and David Gilmour his "Fat Old Sun." The record closes on "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast," in which roadie Alan Styles talks through the breakfast he is cooking and eating, with the sounds of the kitchen recorded around him.

Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis photographed the cover: a cow in a field near Potters Bar, named by her owner as Lulubelle III. It was the first Pink Floyd sleeve not to carry the band's name.
