This is the 1997 remaster of Permanent Waves from Mercury and Anthem, catalog number 314 534 630-2, a single disc holding the original six songs. Bob Ludwig mastered it at Gateway Mastering in Portland, Maine, and the jewel case holds a six-page roll-out booklet with the lyrics and credits.
Rush's seventh studio album was released on January 14, 1980. The band wrote it at a farm near Flesherton, Ontario, then recorded it with co-producer Terry Brown and engineer Paul Northfield at Le Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec, in September and October 1979, mixing at Trident Studios in London. Hugh Syme, who also designed the cover, plays piano on "Different Strings."
The songs leaned toward tighter arrangements, and "The Spirit of Radio" became the band's first single to reach the Canadian top 30. The album peaked at No. 3 in Canada and the UK and No. 4 in the US, went gold in the US within two months and was certified platinum there in 1987.
