UltraDisc One-Step, Numbered Edition Of 5,000, 180g 45 RPM 2LP Box Set

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's UltraDisc One-Step edition of A Farewell To Kings, catalog number UD1S 2-069, spreads Rush's 1977 album over four sides of two 180 gram LPs at 45 RPM. The One-Step method makes the stampers in a single plating step instead of the usual three, skipping two generations of copying. Krieg Wunderlich cut the lacquers at MoFi in Sebastopol, California, from the 1/4-inch, 15 IPS Dolby A analog tape by way of DSD 256 and an analog console, and Fidelity Record Pressing pressed the discs. The run is limited to 5,000 numbered copies, each LP in its own foil-stamped jacket inside a deluxe slipcase. The tapes are licensed from Anthem and Universal Music Enterprises.

This was the band's fifth studio album and the first it recorded away from Toronto. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart cut it with co-producer Terry Brown at Rockfield Studios in Wales in June and July of 1977, with Pat Moran engineering, then mixed it at Advision in London. Peart said the album was "put down in three weeks." MoFi's notes say the band recorded parts of it outdoors: the knocking that opens "Xanadu" was taped in the Rockfield courtyard, and Lifeson played the guitar introduction to the title track while walking the grounds, with birds audible on both.

The arrangements grew to match. Lee added a Minimoog and bass-pedal synthesizer, Lifeson classical and 12-string guitars and bass pedals of his own, and Peart orchestra bells, tubular bells, temple blocks, wind chimes and a bell tree. MoFi's notes say "Xanadu," loosely drawn from Coleridge's "Kubla Khan," was finished in one take. "Closer to the Heart," with lyrics co-written by Peter Talbot, reached No. 36 in the UK; "Cinderella Man" borrows its premise from the 1936 film Mr. Deeds Goes to Town; and "Cygnus X-1" ends on a story the band picked up again on Hemispheres.

The album came out in 1977 and reached No. 11 in Canada, No. 22 in the UK and No. 33 on the Billboard 200, and it is certified platinum in the United States and Canada and gold in the UK. Hugh Syme designed the cover around a photograph by Yosh Inouye, and MoFi's notes identify Toronto's Harbourcastle Hilton in the scene.
