This single CD carries the 2023 remaster made for the album's fiftieth year by James Guthrie, with Joel Plante, at das boot recording. Sold separately from October 13, 2023, the disc arrives in a gatefold sleeve with a 12-page booklet; its face prints catalog number PFR50CD1, and the sleeve sticker reads "Remastered for the 50th Anniversary." The embedded "Brain Damage" clip uses the same remaster.

The remaster made its debut on March 24, 2023, in the 50th Anniversary box set, alongside the Wembley 1974 concert, Blu-ray and DVD surround mixes and a 160-page hardcover photo book. This CD is the studio album from that set, sold on its own.

The piece was on stage long before it was on record. Pink Floyd premiered it at the Dome in Brighton on January 20, 1972, under the working title "Dark Side of the Moon: A Piece for Assorted Lunatics," and briefly renamed it "Eclipse" after Medicine Head issued an album with the original title. The finished record came out in March 1973.

Much of its sound was built from found material. Alan Parsons recorded the clocks heard on "Time" in an antique clock shop, originally as a quadraphonic test, and Roger Waters assembled the loop that opens "Money" in 7/4 from recordings of coins and other money-related sounds. The spoken fragments come from answers Waters collected by showing questions on cards to Abbey Road staff and friends, among them the studio's doorman Gerry O'Driscoll, whose words close the album. "Speak to Me" is credited to Nick Mason alone.

The album first reached CD in Japan in June 1983 and in the United States and Europe in August 1984. Its worldwide sales were estimated at about 45 million copies by 2013.
