Black Vinyl 2LP Set

This 2026 Columbia/Legacy reissue returns Bob Dylan at Budokan to two black LPs and keeps the original double-album running order: 22 songs, five on the first side, six on each of the middle two and five on the last. The official Bob Dylan store gives the same four-side layout for this pressing.

The recordings come from the fourth and fifth of eight concerts Dylan played at the Nippon Budokan Hall in Tokyo, on February 28 and March 1, 1978, early in his 1978 world tour. Don DeVito produced. The band was built from the players on Street-Legal and enlarged for the road: Steve Douglas on saxophone, flute and recorder, Billy Cross on lead guitar, Alan Pasqua on keyboards, Rob Stoner on bass, Ian Wallace on drums, Bobbye Hall on percussion, David Mansfield on pedal steel, violin and mandolin, Steven Soles on acoustic guitar, and Debi Dye, Jo Ann Harris and Helena Springs singing backup. The arrangements recast songs from across the catalog, from "Mr. Tambourine Man" to "Forever Young."

The double LP was first issued in Japan on August 21, 1978. Heavy importing and at least one counterfeit European edition led to a worldwide release on April 23, 1979; it then reached No. 13 in the US, where it was certified gold, and No. 4 in the UK. Reviews were divided. Robert Christgau gave it a C+, while Janet Maslin, writing for Rolling Stone, called it "a very contentious effort" and, "for the most part, a victorious one." Both Tokyo concerts were later issued in full as The Complete Budokan 1978, in November 2023.
