Mono Mix on Two LPs in a Gatefold Jacket

This is the mono Blonde on Blonde, spread across two LPs and housed in a gatefold jacket. Columbia and Legacy issued it for the European market in 2015 as part of the Legacy Vinyl series, and every track is the mono version. The sleeve carries two catalog numbers: the original 1966 mono number, C2L 41, on the front cover, spine and labels, and the reissue number, 88875146311, on the spine, back cover and labels. A circular LP logo sits on the spine. Later runs under this same barcode, logged in 2018 and 2021, keep the configuration but carry different runout etchings.

Blonde on Blonde is Dylan's seventh studio album and one of the first double albums in rock. Sessions opened in New York in October 1965, yet only "One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later)" survived from them onto the finished record. At producer Bob Johnston's suggestion the work moved to Columbia's studio in Nashville in February 1966, where Al Kooper and Robbie Robertson were joined by session players including Charlie McCoy, Wayne Moss, Joe South and Kenny Buttrey. At Dylan's request Johnston took down the baffles that normally separate the players, and Buttrey later credited the album's sound to that tighter, stage-like setup.

The Nashville songs were cut in two blocks, February 14-17 and March 8-10. "Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands," worked out in the small hours of a February session, runs 11 minutes 23 seconds and takes up all of side four by itself.

The album reached number nine on the Billboard Top LPs chart and number three in the UK, and was eventually certified double platinum in the US. "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" and "I Want You" were both top-twenty US singles. It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and Rolling Stone placed it at number 38 on its 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
