XL Recordings' North American reissue, catalog number XLLP781, cut across two LPs in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves. Twelve songs run four sides at a little under 54 minutes, which is what the extra disc buys: wider grooves and shorter sides than a single-LP cut of the same record.

Radiohead recorded most of it themselves, co-producing with Nigel Godrich. Work began at Canned Applause, a converted apple shed near Didcot, in July 1996, and moved to St Catherine's Court near Bath from September 1996 to March 1997, with further sessions at The Church in Crouch End. The strings were taped at Abbey Road in January 1997.

It was released on May 21, 1997 in Japan, June 16 in the United Kingdom and July 1 in the United States. It entered the UK chart at number one on 136,000 copies in its first week and reached number 21 on the Billboard 200. The BPI certifies it five times platinum and the RIAA twice platinum.

"Paranoid Android" was the first single in May 1997, followed by "Karma Police" — heard above, and the third song on side B — in August, "Lucky" in France that December and "No Surprises" in January 1998. The album won the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album in 1998 and was shortlisted for the 1997 Mercury Prize.
