180-Gram Vinyl Reissue

Jazz Wax Records put this 180-gram pressing out in Europe in 2010, catalog number JWR 4534, and it carries artwork made for the reissue rather than the Columbia jacket. The front is a reproduction of a studio recording log, its ruled columns headed Selection Title, Spot Data and Master No. with "So What" and "Freddie Freeloader" written in by hand, set behind a black-and-white photograph of three of the players in the studio. The six musicians are named across the front beneath the title: John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb.

The five performances run 45 minutes and 34 seconds and were cut to three-track tape in 1959. Cannonball Adderley sits out "Blue in Green," and Wynton Kelly takes the piano chair on "Freddie Freeloader." Davis called the method "a return to melody," and told Nat Hentoff of The Jazz Review in 1958 that working without chords "gives you a lot more freedom and space to hear things."

Rolling Stone placed the album at No. 12 on its 2003 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and at No. 31 in the 2020 revision. Duane Allman said his soloing on songs such as "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" came from Miles and Coltrane and particularly from this record, and Pink Floyd's Richard Wright said its chord progressions shaped the opening of "Breathe" on The Dark Side of the Moon. The video above is a performance of "So What," which opens the record.
