2CD Reissue, Original Columbia Jazz Classics Series

This is the 2010 European Columbia/Legacy edition of Live-Evil, catalog number 88697694552, issued in the Original Columbia Jazz Classics series. The two discs come in a clear double jewel case with a four-page insert. Digital mastering is credited to Tom Ruff at Sony Music Studios in New York, with Bob Belden as reissue producer. The split follows the original double LP: its first two sides fill disc one and its last two fill disc two.

Columbia first released Live-Evil on November 17, 1971, and it reached No. 7 on Billboard's jazz albums chart. It joins two kinds of recording. The four long tracks come from the band's December 19, 1970 set at the Cellar Door in Washington, D.C., which producer Teo Macero edited and assembled in the studio. "Little Church," "Nem Um Talvez" and "Selim" were recorded at Columbia Studio B in New York on June 3 and 4, 1970, and the first two are Hermeto Pascoal compositions. Apple Music's notes describe "Sivad" as spliced together from takes of "Directions" and "Honky Tonk." Pitchfork rated the album 9.9 out of 10.

The live band featured Gary Bartz on alto and soprano saxophone, Keith Jarrett on electric piano and organ, Michael Henderson on electric bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Airto Moreira on percussion. Guitarist John McLaughlin, not a regular member of the group at the time, was added for the recorded night. Mati Klarwein had already painted the front cover when Davis asked him for life on one side and evil on the other, and that request became the back. The full Cellar Door performances behind the edits appeared in 2005 as the box set The Cellar Door Sessions 1970.
