Double LP With 12-Page LP-Size Booklet

This double LP presents the Miles Davis Group's set from July 1, 1991, at the Jazz à Vienne festival in France. The concert went unissued for three decades, until Rhino and Warner Records released it on June 25, 2021, as a 2LP, a 2CD and a digital album. The eight performances run a little over 80 minutes, and the vinyl sequences them for four sides rather than in the 1-through-8 order of the CD and streaming editions: "Hannibal" and "Jailbait" share side A, and "Human Nature" fills side C on its own. Inside the jacket is a 12-page booklet printed at LP size, carrying an account of the recording and the tour written in March 2021 by music historian and producer Ashley Kahn. Bruno Tilley designed the artwork.

The stage was the Théâtre antique de Vienne, the town's ancient theater, on the festival's opening night. Davis led Kenny Garrett on alto saxophone and flute, Deron Johnson on keyboards, Joe "Foley" McCreary, Richard Patterson on electric bass and Ricky Wellman on drums. Alongside Marcus Miller's "Hannibal", the band plays "Human Nature" and "Time After Time", songs associated with Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper, and two Prince compositions, "Penetration" and "Jailbait".

Days after the concert, French culture minister Jack Lang made Davis a Knight of the Legion of Honor. He died on September 28, 1991, which places Vienne among his final live performances. Ashley Kahn, Florence Joelle Halfon and Vince Wilburn Jr. produced the release, which Rhino issued as part of its Black Music Month program and which peaked at No. 9 on Billboard's Jazz Albums chart.
