Blue Note Tone Poet Edition, Mono 180g LP in a Gatefold Tip-On Jacket

This is the mono Tone Poet Vinyl Edition of Birth of the Cool, released by Blue Note on May 22, 2026 to mark the Miles Davis Centennial. Joe Harley produced it for release, and Kevin Gray of Cohearent Audio cut it directly from the original analog phono reel master tapes. Record Technology Inc. (RTI) pressed it on 180-gram vinyl.

The package is a deluxe gatefold tip-on jacket. Inside, the spread is given over to session photographs by William "PoPsie" Randolph, including the Miles Davis Nonet at WOR Studios on January 21, 1949. The inner credits name Pete Rugolo as original producer and Aram Avakian for the cover photo, with the reissue design by Terry Davis at Meat and Potatoes. A separate insert reproduces the original Capitol back cover, catalog number T762, and the disc carries a Capitol label.

Blue Note's store traces the Tone Poet series to label president Don Was's admiration for the Music Matters audiophile reissues. Was brought in Joe Harley, known as the "Tone Poet," to supervise reissues drawn from across the Blue Note family of labels. Harley calls this record "an audacious gathering of sonic architects reshaping the language of jazz in real time."

The eleven sides come from three Capitol sessions in New York, held on January 21 and April 22, 1949, and March 9, 1950. Most were first issued on 10-inch 78-rpm singles, and Capitol did not collect them as a 12-inch LP called Birth of the Cool until 1957. The nonet's French horn and tuba gave the arrangements, by Gil Evans, Gerry Mulligan, John Lewis and others, a texture borrowed from impressionist classical music. Lee Konitz, J.J. Johnson, Kai Winding, Max Roach and Kenny Clarke are among the players. This pressing follows the eleven-track 1957 running order, so "Darn That Dream," the vocal side added on later compilations, is not included.
