180 Gram Black Vinyl Mono Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series

Blue Note 1501 was one of the first two twelve-inch records the label ever issued. Alfred Lion built it in 1955 out of material Miles Davis had already released across three ten-inch LPs, Young Man with a Horn (BLP 5013), Miles Davis, Vol. 2 (BLP 5022) and Miles Davis, Vol. 3 (BLP 5040), and it opened the 1500 series alongside its companion volume.

Everything here comes from two sextet dates at WOR Studios in New York: May 9, 1952 and April 20, 1953. The 1952 session put J.J. Johnson on trombone and Jackie McLean on alto beside Davis, with Oscar Pettiford on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums. The 1953 date kept Johnson, brought in Jimmy Heath on tenor, and changed the rhythm section to Percy Heath and Art Blakey. Gil Coggins plays piano on both. Davis was twenty-six at the second session, several years before the Columbia quintet.

Sources carrying the distributor's listing render the pianist as "Gi Coggins" and place a third session, from 1954, on this record. Neither is right: the 1954 Hackensack date belongs to the companion volume, and the pianist is Gil Coggins.

Side B closes with a Dizzy Gillespie composition that Blue Note printed as "Would'n You" in 1955. The misprint has been carried forward onto this reissue's labels and jacket, so it appears here as the record itself prints it; the composition is "Woody 'n You."

Kevin Gray cut this edition at Cohearent Audio, working all-analog from the original tapes, and the lacquers are signed KPG@CA in both runouts. The record is mono and pressed on 180 gram vinyl at Optimal in Germany. The jacket reproduces Francis Wolff's cover photograph with the original design by John Hermansader and Reid Miles and Leonard Feather's liner notes; Rudy Van Gelder cut the 1955 original.
