Original Jazz Classics Series 180g Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Jacket

Craft Recordings issued this Boss Guitar in its Original Jazz Classics Series under catalog number CR00727. The mastering is all-analog from the original tapes, with Kevin Gray cutting the lacquers at Cohearent Audio; RTI pressed the 180-gram disc, and the jacket is a Stoughton tip-on. The cover and labels follow the original Riverside stereo design.

Wes Montgomery recorded the album on April 22, 1963, at Plaza Sound Studios in New York, with Orrin Keepnews producing and Ray Fowler engineering. Riverside released it that year as RS 9459 in stereo and RM 459 in mono, and Craft counts it as his eighth album. Joe Goldberg wrote the original liner notes, reproduced on the back.

The session returns Montgomery to the guitar, organ and drums trio of his first Riverside date, with fellow Indianapolis musician Mel Rhyne on organ and Jimmy Cobb, of the Miles Davis rhythm section, on drums. The program mixes standards such as "Besame Mucho," "Days of Wine and Roses" and "Canadian Sunset" with two Montgomery originals, "The Trick Bag" and "Fried Pies." This LP keeps the original eight-track sequence, without the alternate takes added to later CD editions.
