Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180-Gram Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition belongs to Verve's Acoustic Sounds Series, whose titles are mastered by Matthew Lutthans from the original analog tapes, pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings and housed in tip-on gatefold jackets. The jacket is an old-style tip-on printed by Stoughton Printing, and it carries the original Verve catalog number, V6-8672. The single LP runs five tracks a side, as the 1967 release did.

Wes Montgomery cut the album for producer Creed Taylor at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, on September 14, 15 and 16, 1966, with Don Sebesky arranging and conducting a large ensemble. Herbie Hancock plays piano, Richard Davis bass and Grady Tate drums, alongside Ray Barretto on percussion, Bucky Pizzarelli on guitar and a brass section that includes Bernie Glow and Bill Watrous.

The program draws on the pop songbook of its day. It opens with John and Michelle Phillips's "California Dreaming," a Top 5 hit for The Mamas and The Papas, and carries Bobby Hebb's "Sunny" and three Sol Lake tunes, with "Sun Down" and "Mr. Walker" from Montgomery's own pen. Verve issued it in 1967, and it reached No. 1 on Billboard's jazz album chart and No. 4 on the R&B album chart. It was the last Verve release of his lifetime, followed only by a trio of albums for A&M.
