Half-Speed Master on 180g Black Vinyl

This It's Only Rock 'N Roll comes from the Abbey Road Studios half-speed series: a single 180-gram black LP with a printed inner sleeve of credits and photographs. The cut was made for the 2018 studio albums box and reached shops as a standalone LP in June 2020.

Released on October 18, 1974, it was the band's twelfth studio album and the first that Mick Jagger and Keith Richards produced under the name the Glimmer Twins. Most of the backing tracks were laid down at Musicland Studios in Munich from November 1973, and Jagger recorded his lead vocals afterward. It was also Mick Taylor's last album as a member of the band.

The title song began away from the Stones. Its basic track came out of a session at Ronnie Wood's house, The Wick, with Kenney Jones on drums, Willie Weeks on bass and David Bowie on backing vocals, and Wood's 12-string acoustic stayed on the released version. The only cover, the Temptations' "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," survives from an early plan to give one side over to R&B covers.

Ray Cooper plays percussion here, his first appearance on a Stones record. Belgian painter Guy Peellaert made the cover, which shows the band coming down a temple staircase among worshippers in Grecian dress. The album reached number one in the US and number two in the UK.
