180-Gram 4LP Box Set With Booklet

Craft Recordings released Miles '56: The Prestige Recordings on June 19, 2026, for the Miles Davis centennial, as a limited box of four 180-gram LPs, catalog number CR00693. It follows earlier sets in the same series built around 1954 and 1955. Paul Blakemore remastered the recordings from the original analog tapes, and Kevin Gray cut the lacquers at Cohearent Audio; his KPG@CA mark is etched in all eight runouts. The box includes a booklet with new liner notes by Ashley Kahn and session notes by Dan Morgenstern. The official trailer above shows the set.

The year's work for Prestige centers on the quintet of Davis, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones, and the selection draws on the four albums cut from its sessions with Rudy Van Gelder: Cookin', Relaxin', Workin' and Steamin'. Craft also credits Sonny Rollins, Tommy Flanagan and Art Taylor, who play on the March 16, 1956 date that opens the first side with "In Your Own Sweet Way," "No Line" and "Vierd Blues."

The sequence runs 29 performances across eight sides, including both takes of "The Theme" on side E, "'Round Midnight" on side F, and a closing side of "Blues by Five" and "My Funny Valentine."
