Yellow Vinyl LP, Record Store Day Drops 2021

This single LP was pressed on yellow vinyl for the July 17, 2021 Record Store Day Drop, in a run of 7,500 copies. Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, made it for that event under catalog number 19439860581, with Columbia and Legacy credits on the sleeve. Legacy's notes describe it as the first time this music had been issued on vinyl for general release.

The six performances come from The Complete Jack Johnson Sessions, the Columbia/Legacy box issued in 2003 as the seventh set in the Miles Davis Series. Those sessions, recorded in New York between November 1969 and June 1970, supplied the basis for the 1971 album Jack Johnson and some of the studio portions of Live-Evil.

Legacy's notes trace the record to Davis's love of boxing, which he saw as running parallel to his own relationship with music. They name his 1971 soundtrack to Bill Cayton's documentary about Jack Johnson as one of his favorites among his own recordings, and say he was drawn to the political and racial subtext of the boxer's story. Four of the titles here name fighters: "Ali," "Sugar Ray," "Duran" and "Johnny Bratton."

The label lists Wayne Shorter, John McLaughlin, Dave Holland, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Jack DeJohnette and Billy Cobham among the players. The cover is Jim Marshall's photograph of Davis in the ring. The back cover lists the closer as a bonus track, "Right Off (Take 11)," and the package carries a download code for MP3s of five of the six tracks, "Ali (Take 3)" excepted.
