180 Gram Stereo Vinyl

This Columbia and Legacy LP presents Kind of Blue in stereo on 180-gram vinyl, catalog number 88697680571, in the album's original layout: "So What," "Freddie Freeloader" and "Blue in Green" on side one, "All Blues" and "Flamenco Sketches" on side two. "So What," the opening track, is the video above.

The sides follow the sessions. Davis's sextet recorded the three side-one pieces at Columbia's 30th Street Studio in New York on March 2, 1959, and the two side-two pieces there on April 22. The group was John Coltrane, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley, Bill Evans, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb, with Wynton Kelly taking the piano chair from Evans on "Freddie Freeloader." Irving Townsend produced, and Fred Plaut engineered.

Davis built the album entirely on modes, giving each player a set of scales rather than a run of chord changes, and Evans wrote in the original liner notes that Davis conceived the settings only hours before the recording dates. The Davis estate acknowledged Evans's authorship of "Blue in Green" in 2002.

Columbia released Kind of Blue on August 17, 1959. In 2002 it was among the first fifty recordings the Library of Congress selected for the National Recording Registry, and in 2019 the RIAA certified it five times platinum.
