Double LP on 140-Gram Black Vinyl

Rhino first issued The Very Best of the Warner Bros. Sessions 1985-1991 on CD in 2007, and this double LP is its first appearance on vinyl. The fifteen tracks run across four sides of 140-gram black vinyl, housed in a single-pocket picture sleeve.

The vinyl sequence departs from the CD issued alongside it in one place: the first LP's second side closes with "The Doo-Bop Song," where the CD running order has "Full Nelson." Nine of the fifteen tracks are credited as 2002 remasters.

Davis left Columbia for Warner Bros. in 1985, after thirty years with the label. Tommy LiPuma, a senior vice president at Warner, brought him over and put forward Marcus Miller, then 27, to produce the first Warner album, Tutu. It was recorded in early 1986 and released that October, and its title track opens side A here.

"The Doo-Bop Song" comes from Doo-Bop, which Davis recorded in early 1991 with hip-hop producer Easy Mo Bee. Davis died on September 28, 1991; Easy Mo Bee completed the album, and Warner Bros. released it on June 30, 1992.

The second LP turns to collaborations and the stage. Its first side pairs Davis with Michel Legrand on "Trumpet Cleaning," with Marcus Miller on the "Siesta" medley, and with Quincy Jones on live versions of "The Pan Piper" and "Summertime." The closing side gathers live recordings of "In a Silent Way," "Time After Time" and "Hannibal."
