Original 1976 Masters, Jewel Case CD

This is the ten-track CD of the Original 1976 Masters edition, carrying the album's 1976 stereo mixes rather than a new one. Exciter Records had the original analog master tapes preserved and transferred at high resolution at British Grove Studios in London, supervised by Tom Allom and Luie Stylianou, and Matt Colton mastered the restored audio at Metropolis Studios. The disc sits in a classic jewel case with liner notes by Bryan Reesman and archival photographs the label describes as previously unseen. Michael Closter, who founded Exciter Records, says the label acquired the tapes and worked from them directly: "we believe we have created the most faithful presentation of the original Sad Wings of Destiny."

The disc opens on "Prelude," which is where the band wanted the album to start; the 1976 Gull pressing, catalog number GULP 1015, led with "Victim of Changes" instead. Track ten is "Diamonds and Rust," Joan Baez's song from her 1975 A&M album of the same name, in the take Judas Priest cut during these sessions and left off the album. It is the 1976 recording, not the remix Exciter issued alongside this edition, and not the one that opens 1977's Sin After Sin.

The album reached shops on March 23, 1976, two years after the band's Gull debut Rocka Rolla. Gull put them with Jeffrey Calvert and Max West, who had a number one single of their own in the summer of 1975 as Typically Tropical with "Barbados." The engineer on the sessions, Chris Tsangarides, went on to produce Painkiller for the band in 1990. Three songs carry the Halford, Tipton and Downing writing credit together: "Genocide," "Island of Domination" and "Deceiver." Metal Hammer puts the album's UK chart peak at number 48 and calls it the band's first chart entry at home.
