Mobile Fidelity Numbered Edition, 180-Gram 45 RPM 2LP

Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab spread Workingman's Dead across two 180-gram LPs cut to play at 45 RPM, two songs to a side, and the label calls it the first 45 RPM version of the album. It first appeared in 2014 as catalog number MFSL 2-428, a limited edition with each copy's number stamped in gold on the back of the gatefold jacket.

Krieg Wunderlich mastered it at the label's studio in Sebastopol, California, working from the original quarter-inch, 15 IPS Dolby A master tapes. Mobile Fidelity gives the signal path as tape straight to the lathe, through its GAIN 2 Ultra Analog System, and the records were plated and pressed at RTI. The discs ship in static-free inner sleeves.

The Grateful Dead made the album in about nine days in February 1970 at Pacific High Recording in San Francisco, and Warner Bros. released it on June 14, 1970. Jerry Garcia and lyricist Robert Hunter wrote most of the songs, which turned away from long improvisation toward country, folk and blues forms. Garcia added pedal steel, and the band worked up close three-part harmonies after time spent around Crosby, Stills and Nash. David Nelson plays acoustic guitar on "Cumberland Blues."

Workingman's Dead reached No. 27 on the Billboard album chart, and Rolling Stone readers voted it the best album of 1970. Hunter stands with the band as an unofficial seventh member in the sepia cover photograph.
