50th Anniversary Edition, 1971 Mix on 180-Gram Black Vinyl

This LP presents the Grateful Dead's 1971 remix of Aoxomoxoa, remastered for the album's 50th anniversary and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl. Its sleeve sticker calls it the "50th Anniversary Remastered Audio of the Definitive 1971 Band-Produced Mix." Manufactured and marketed by Rhino, this US pressing was released in 2020 under catalog number R1 591257, with Warner Bros.-Seven Arts labels and a Made in U.S.A. credit.

The band returned to the album in September 1971 and remixed it in full at Alembic Studios in San Francisco, with Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh overseeing the work. Warner Bros. had asked for the remix to make the record more accessible, and the reissue's notes say the new mix dialed back some of the wilder moments and added clarity. From then on the remix was the version in print; the original 1969 mix stayed off vinyl and CD until Rhino's 2010 box set The Warner Bros. Studio Albums.

Aoxomoxoa was the band's third studio album, issued by Warner Bros.-Seven Arts on June 20, 1969. The Dead produced it themselves and scrapped their first eight-track sessions to record again on sixteen tracks, at Pacific Recording in San Mateo and Pacific High Recording in San Francisco, making it one of the first rock albums made that way. It was the first Dead album with lyrics written entirely by Robert Hunter, and the first with Tom Constanten as an official member. Rick Griffin's cover art began as a poster for the band's January 1969 shows at the Avalon Ballroom.
