50th Anniversary Remaster on 180-Gram Black Vinyl

This is the standard black pressing of the Wake of the Flood 50th anniversary remaster: one 180-gram LP holding the original seven-song album, catalog number R1 721382. It came out on September 29, 2023, alongside a two-CD Deluxe Edition that adds two demos and a November 1, 1973 concert from McGaw Hall in Evanston, Illinois. The vinyl keeps strictly to the 1973 running order.

Before the new master was made, Plangent Processes restored the original tapes and corrected their speed. GRAMMY-winning engineer David Glasser did the mastering, and David Lemieux, the band's legacy manager and audio archivist, produced the release.

Wake of the Flood was first issued on October 15, 1973, as the debut release on Grateful Dead Records, the label the band started after their Warner Bros. contract ended. It was their first studio album in nearly three years and the first made after the death of founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan. Keith Godchaux plays keyboards and Donna Jean Godchaux sings, both on a Dead studio album for the first time.

It was cut over two weeks in August 1973 at the Record Plant in Sausalito, where staff engineer Tom Flye and the band's soundman Dan Healy recorded on 24 tracks. Five of the seven songs had already been worked out on stage, some for as long as a year and a half. Bob Weir's "Weather Report Suite," with words by John Perry Barlow, takes up the end of side B. The album peaked at No. 18 on the Billboard chart, a higher placing than American Beauty had reached.
