Hand-Numbered 6LP Box Set on 180-Gram Black Vinyl, Limited to 3,500

Real Gone Music's vinyl edition of Dick's Picks Vol. 4 spreads the two Fillmore East concerts of February 13 and 14, 1970 across six 180-gram black LPs, pressed at Gotta Groove Records. The sixth record carries music on one side only. Jeffrey Norman made a new master for this set, and Clint Holley and Dave Polster cut the lacquers at Well Made Music. The records sit in a two-piece hardcover box with an insert reprinting Owsley "Bear" Stanley's original liner notes, and each box is hand-numbered out of 3,500. Real Gone's catalog number is RGM-1939; the box is manufactured for Rhino. Real Gone first issued the set in 2025 through its own store.

The label is open about its attachment to the title: having sold the Dick's Picks series since the company began, Real Gone calls Vol. 4 its favorite of the 36 volumes. The set's hype sticker bills the 1970 Valentine's Day weekend shows as "featuring perhaps the greatest 'Dark Star' ever."

Owsley Stanley recorded both nights on half-track analog tape, and Dick Latvala served as tape archivist for the release. Grateful Dead Records first issued Dick's Picks Vol. 4 in February 1996 as three CDs, the first three-disc release in the series. It was the second album drawn from these shows: Stanley had already taken parts of each night's first set and acoustic second set for History of the Grateful Dead, Volume One (Bear's Choice) in 1973, and Dick's Picks Vol. 4 holds the complete third sets of both shows plus two further tracks. It was also the first Grateful Dead album to include "Mason's Children."

The lineup was Jerry Garcia on lead guitar and vocals, Bob Weir on guitar and vocals, Phil Lesh on bass and vocals, Ron "Pigpen" McKernan on organ, percussion and vocals, and Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart on drums. Reviewing the original CDs for Rolling Stone, Greg Kot wrote that "when the early Dead were at their best, few American bands were better in concert."
