Mobile Fidelity Numbered 180g 45 RPM 2LP In Stoughton Gatefold Jacket

This is Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab's numbered Original Master Recording edition of Duty Now for the Future, catalog number MFSL 2-628, and the first time the album has been issued at 45 RPM. Spreading the record across two 180-gram LPs gives each of the four sides more groove space than the original single disc allowed. Mobile Fidelity sourced it from the original 1/4-inch, 15 IPS Dolby A analog master tapes, transferred to DSD 256 and run through an analog console to the lathe, with Krieg Wunderlich mastering. The discs are pressed at Fidelity Record Pressing in California and housed in a Stoughton gatefold jacket, and each copy is individually numbered.

Duty Now for the Future was Devo's second studio album, released by Warner Bros. in 1979 as the follow-up to Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! Ken Scott produced and engineered it at Chateau Recorders in Hollywood between September 1978 and early 1979, and Mobile Fidelity's notes point out that much of the material came from songs the band had banked before signing with Warner Bros. The lineup was Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, Bob Mothersbaugh, Bob Casale and Alan Myers. Bob Mothersbaugh takes a rare lead vocal on the cover of Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man," which was issued as a single, as was "The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprize." The album reached No. 73 on the Billboard 200 and No. 49 in the UK.

Janet Perr designed the cover from a Devo concept built around a satirical fake Universal Product Code, and the "Science Boy" logo traces back to a 1956 design by George L. Kaufman for a Cleveland Press contest. Dave Marsh's Rolling Stone review condemned the record on its release. Mobile Fidelity's notes add that more than half of its tracks were later chosen for Greatest Misses, a 1990 anthology, while "Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA" was the only one to make the companion hits collection. The video above is Devo performing "The Day My Baby Gave Me a Surprize" on the television program Rockpop on October 13, 1979.
