Limited Edition Rocktober 2020 Golfball White Vinyl LP

This is Rhino's Rocktober 2020 pressing of Devo's debut album, cut on golfball-white vinyl and limited to 4,000 copies. Rocktober is Rhino's annual reissue campaign, and this title was issued on October 30, 2020 to participating brick-and-mortar record shops only.

The single LP comes in the standard sleeve with a reproduction of the original inner sleeve. The disc carries the Warner Records label and catalog number RCV5 3239, and the release was manufactured for and marketed by Rhino Entertainment.

Joe Heiner's cover portrait is set against a pattern of golf-ball dimples. It began as an image of golfer Chi-Chi Rodríguez that the band found on a golf strap; after Warner Bros. objected, the face was blended with a newspaper composite of John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson, Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. Gerald Casale later said the interference produced something "far more Devo than the original image."

Brian Eno produced the album, recording it mainly at Conny Plank's studio near Cologne in February 1978, with David Bowie helping on weekends while he was filming Just a Gigolo. "Come Back Jonee" and "Shrivel-Up" started as sessions with Patrick Gleeson at Different Fur in San Francisco and were overdubbed in Germany. Warner Bros. released the record in the US in 1978. It reached No. 78 on the Billboard chart and No. 12 in the UK, was certified gold in the US in 2001, and placed at No. 252 on Rolling Stone's 2020 list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
