Warp's single-LP edition of Richard D. James Album, catalog number WARP LP 43, with ten tracks running five to a side from "4" to "Logan-Rock Witch." This is the original UK running order; the American edition added the Girl/Boy EP. Warp reissued the album on 180-gram vinyl in 2012 and has repressed it under this catalog number and barcode since, with later runs adding a download card. The sleeve credits the writing, production and design to "Me."
Warp first released the album on November 4, 1996. Richard D. James composed most of it on a Macintosh, setting fast breakbeats and intricate drum programming from jungle and drum and bass against string arrangements and treated vocals. For the strings he bought a violin at a car boot sale and sampled single notes from it, and on "To Cure A Weakling Child" he pitched his own voice to sound like a child's.
It reached No. 62 in the UK and No. 7 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, and had sold more than 100,000 copies within a year, making it Warp's most successful release at the time. Pitchfork ranked it No. 40 among the best albums of the 1990s.
