Black 4LP Vinyl In Gatefold Sleeve

Warp Records' 25th-anniversary reissue of Drukqs spreads the album across four black LPs, each in a polylined inner sleeve, housed in a gatefold outer sleeve. The album's original 2001 vinyl edition came as a 4LP box set; this is a standard gatefold pressing. Warp also issued a separate lift-off-lid 4LP box, sold directly through the Aphex Twin store and Bleep. Warp notes that the reissue means every Aphex Twin album is once again in print on vinyl.

Drukqs first appeared on Warp on October 22, 2001, as Richard D. James's fifth studio album as Aphex Twin: thirty tracks running a little over 100 minutes. It moves between prepared-piano pieces and dense programmed rhythm, and several of its acoustic tracks were played by computer-controlled instruments, including a modified Yamaha Disklavier and solenoid-driven drum mechanisms James built himself. Many of the titles are in Cornish (Jynweythek translates as "machine"); James has said the album title is simply a word he made up.

James has said he left an MP3 player holding unreleased tracks on a plane and put the album out to pre-empt a leak. Drukqs reached No. 22 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 1 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, and No. 154 on the Billboard 200, where it also reached No. 6 on Top Dance Albums; it was later certified Silver in the UK. The prepared-piano piece "Avril 14th" was used in Kanye West's "Blame Game" in 2010. The reviews divided at the time: NME's Alex Needham called the album "beautiful," Rolling Stone's Pat Blashill called it Aphex Twin's "most irrelevant album to date," and Sasha Frere-Jones later wrote in The Rolling Stone Album Guide that it is "often spectacular."
