Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf 180-Gram Black 2LP Reissue

This is the Jazz Dispensary Top Shelf edition of Woody Shaw's debut as a leader, issued by Craft Recordings in 2023 as the second Top Shelf title of that year. Jazz Dispensary is Craft's imprint for music drawn from the Prestige, Fantasy, Contemporary and Milestone catalogs, and Craft describes this set as the first wide reissue since the album's original 1971 release on Contemporary.

All four sides were cut from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at RTI. The two discs sit in a tip-on gatefold jacket that reproduces the original Contemporary design and carries Nat Hentoff's original liner notes, including commentary from Shaw himself. The reissue's catalog number is CR00520; the 1971 Contemporary issue was S7627/8.

Shaw recorded the album at A&R Studios in New York City on December 8 and 9, 1970, with Lester Koenig producing. He had no working band of his own at the time. Pianist George Cables and drummer Lenny White came from Joe Henderson's group, while bassist Ron Carter and reed players Bennie Maupin and Gary Bartz had all worked for Miles Davis in the preceding years. Clint Houston joined on electric bass, and he and Carter play together on four of the six tracks. The stereo mix places Bartz and Carter on the left channel and Maupin and Houston on the right.

Shaw dedicated the record to the youth of the era and, in his own words, to "the freedom of Black people all over the world." The title track runs past sixteen minutes and fills side A on its own, as the Cables composition "New World" does side C. "Boo-Ann's Grand" is named for Shaw's wife, Betty Ann, and was first recorded with Jackie McLean in 1967 as "Boo-Ann's Grind." The closing "A Deed for Dolphy" honors Eric Dolphy, the mentor Shaw had played alongside as a sideman. Craft's notes cite AllMusic calling the album "a landmark recording."

Shaw, who died in 1989, went on to lead more than two dozen albums, among them the GRAMMY-nominated Rosewood from 1978.
