5LP Box Set Collecting War's First Five Studio Albums After Eric Burdon

The Vinyl: 1971-1975 gathers five albums on five LPs in one box from Avenue Records and Rhino: War, All Day Music, The World Is A Ghetto, Deliver The Word and Why Can't We Be Friends?. These are the band's studio albums from the years after Eric Burdon's departure, every one produced by Jerry Goldstein for United Artists. The set first appeared as a Record Store Day exclusive in July 2021, limited to 5,000 copies with each album on a different color of vinyl; this 2026 issue carries its own UPC and is a separate release from that edition.

The box art is a single crowded street scene drawn by Dave Van Patten, the illustrator Rhino also used for War's CD Collection 1971-1975 and The Vinyl 1977-1994. Song titles hang from its windows and signs, from "The Cisco Kid" and "Four Cornered Room" to "Gypsy Man," and a convertible lettered "Lowrider" sits at its center.

War, issued in March 1971, was the first record under the shortened name and was recorded at Wally Heider's studios in San Francisco and Los Angeles. All Day Music followed that November and carried "Slippin' Into Darkness," a gold single that spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100; its closing "Baby Brother" was taped live at the Hollywood Bowl on June 30, 1971.

The World Is A Ghetto reached No. 1 on the Billboard album chart and was Billboard's best-selling album of 1973. Deliver The Word reached No. 6 on the album chart and No. 1 on the R&B album chart, with "Gypsy Man" at No. 8 and "Me And Baby Brother" at No. 15 on the Hot 100. Why Can't We Be Friends?, cut at Sound City in Van Nuys and released on June 16, 1975, holds "Low Rider" and the title song, and both singles were nominated at the 1976 Grammy Awards.

The group across all five albums: Papa Dee Allen on congas and percussion, Harold Brown on drums, B.B. Dickerson on bass, Lonnie Jordan on keyboards, Charles Miller on saxophones and flute, Lee Oskar on harmonica and Howard Scott on guitar, with all seven credited on vocals.
