BMG's 2026 reissue, catalog number 964255171, presses At War with Satan on 140 gram gold vinyl in a gatefold sleeve with a lyric booklet. The imprint is Noise Records, and the sticker on the shrink reads "The Essential Classic Album."

The album is Venom's third. Neat Records first issued it in 1984, recorded at Impulse Studios in Newcastle with the band producing. Side one is given over entirely to the title track, a piece of just under twenty minutes that Cronos has said he wrote with Rush's 2112 in mind. Side two holds the other six songs.

It reached number 64 on the UK Albums Chart and number 48 in Sweden, and HMV withdrew it from sale over its content. H.R. Giger's painting Satan I had been proposed for the cover and was turned down; it appeared the following year on Celtic Frost's To Mega Therion. The jacket used instead is a tooled leather book, its spine lettered "Book of Armageddon" after a companion volume the band announced and never published.

Venom formed in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1979. Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982) came before this one, and the title of the second gave a subgenre its name.
