Limited Edition Opaque Red Vinyl LP in a Gatefold Jacket

This is the vinyl edition of Jazz Dispensary's Studio G compilation: one LP pressed on limited-edition opaque red vinyl and housed in a gatefold jacket, catalog number CR00910. The back cover credits every cue to the Studio G library release it first appeared on. The earliest is Paul Lewis's "Hello Spring," from Animals and Children (1970, LPSG 1004), and the latest are John Hyde and Andrew Procter's two pieces from New Media Music (2009, SG-CD-47). The 1970-2009 in the title comes from that span.

The gatefold carries commentary from Bob Stanley, founding member of Saint Etienne, who traces his own way into library music to the testcard music British television ran when nothing else was on. The liner notes are by Ryan Jebavy (aka Leslie Saucer), who produced the compilation. The illustrations are by gig poster artist Ivan Minsloff, whose work includes posters for the New York Dolls, Willie Nelson, Queens of the Stone Age and SXSW.

Jazz Dispensary built the set as a stand-alone pseudo-soundtrack in two moods rather than a conventional compilation. Side A, "Psychotropic Hopping Morning," holds fifteen tracks. Among them is James Harpham's "Flower Garden," which Knxwledge used on his 2012 album anthrdreem. Side B, "Space Temple Midnight," opens with what Jebavy calls a slow-motion alien crash-landing. Several of the cues are stitched together as new 2025 medleys, and Jebavy's notes for this side point to "Workload," sampled by Tyler, the Creator for his 2021 track "CORSO."

John Gale founded Studio G in London in 1966 to supply music for television, sport and advertising. Its cues turned up on Doctor Who, Vision On and The Darts Show, and Monty Python used several on their 1972 album Previous Record. Later the catalog was sampled by the Chemical Brothers, U.N.K.L.E., Tyler, the Creator and Knxwledge.
