180g Black Vinyl 2LP With Liner Notes Insert

This double LP is the first official release of Thelonious Monk's March 8, 1965, concert in Bremen, issued by Sunnyside as SSC 1635. It was mastered from the original tapes held in the Radio Bremen vaults, with the blessing of NDR, Radio Bremen and T.S. Monk; Radio Bremen's technical staff transferred the tape to 24/96 files, Christoph Romanowski prepared the masters and Katsuhiko Naito mastered the release. Two 180-gram LPs carry the eight performances, and an insert holds liner notes by Sunnyside's Bret Sjerven with black-and-white photographs.

The quartet played Radio Bremen's Sendesaal, Studio F, in front of an audience on the second stop of a world tour that went on through Europe, Australia and Japan. Charlie Rouse is on tenor saxophone, with Larry Gales on bass and Ben Riley on drums. Gales and Riley had recently replaced John Ore and Frankie Dunlop, and both play on Monk's next studio album, Monk. It's Monk's Time, his latest Columbia release, had just come out when the band reached Europe.

Many of the pieces run past ten minutes, beginning with an eleven-minute "Criss Cross." The set pairs Monk's own "Well You Needn't," "Epistrophy" and "Rhythm-a-Ning" with standards he kept returning to, including "Sweet and Lovely," "Don't Blame Me," "Just You, Just Me" and "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You."
