Original Jazz Classics Series 180-Gram Vinyl in a Tip-On Jacket With Obi

This pressing belongs to Craft Recordings' Original Jazz Classics series. Fantasy Records founded the reissue line in 1982, and Craft relaunched it in 2023. Kevin Gray cut the lacquers from the original master tapes at Cohearent Audio in an all-analog chain, and RTI pressed the record on 180-gram vinyl. The jacket is a Stoughton tip-on with an obi strip. It reproduces the original Riverside Stereophonic artwork under the catalog number CR00948, and the labels restore the blue Riverside design.

Monk recorded the album on October 21 and 22, 1959, at Fugazi Hall in San Francisco, with no audience in the room. It was his third solo-piano album, after Piano Solo, cut in Paris in 1954, and Thelonious Himself from 1957. Orrin Keepnews produced the sessions and Reice Hamel engineered them. The obi copy recalls two brief sessions on consecutive afternoons, with only one of the ten selections needing more than one take. It also quotes Ralph J. Gleason's five-star review in DownBeat.

Keepnews' original liner notes are reprinted on the back of the jacket. They place Monk on the stage of a long, empty meeting hall, in front of banks of ornate chandeliers, and "Round Lights" is named for those chandeliers. The first session took place the afternoon after his opening night at the Black Hawk. During a break, photographer William Claxton drove him to city landmarks, including the cable car on the front cover. By Keepnews' account, that drive was Monk's first real view of San Francisco.

The program has six Monk compositions and four standards. "Round Lights" and "Bluehawk" are improvised blues that exist only in these recordings. The standards are Matt Dennis' "Everything Happens to Me," Robin and Rainger's "You Took the Words Right Out of My Heart," and Irving Berlin's "Remember." The fourth is "There's Danger in Your Eyes, Cherie," a 1929 song associated with Harry Richman.
