Limited Pearl Flip & Horizon 2LP At 45 RPM

This limited Sub Pop repress spreads Congregation across two LPs cut to play at 45 RPM, pressed on pearl flip and horizon colored vinyl, under the album's original catalog number, SP 130. Sub Pop sells it as the color 2xLP edition alongside a standard double LP, CD and cassette. The back sleeve prints the standard edition's barcode, and this edition's UPC is carried on a sticker. The runout etchings credit the lacquer cutting to Steffan Jeschek, and the sleeve carries over Caroline de Vita and Jane Higgins' original design with the cover photograph by D.A. Fleischer and John Curley.

Congregation was the band's third album, released by Sub Pop on January 31, 1992, after Big Top Halloween and Up In It. Greg Dulli produced it with Ross Ian Stein, mainly at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, and Buzz's Kitchen in Los Angeles in the summer of 1991, and Jack Skinner mastered it at K Disc in Hollywood. "Miles Iz Ded," the closing track and the B-side of the "Turn On The Water" single, was cut separately at Ultrasuede in Cincinnati that September and is left off the track listing printed on this release. The band was Dulli, guitarist Rick McCollum, bassist John Curley and drummer Steve Earle, with Shawn Smith on backing vocals and Lance Ellison on piano, and "The Temple" is a cover of the song from Jesus Christ Superstar.

"Conjure Me" was released as a 7-inch in May 1992 and its video went into rotation on MTV. Rolling Stone's Michael Azerrad called the album "superb," Melody Maker placed it at No. 25 on its 1992 year-end list, and AllMusic's Jason Ankeny called it "the grunge era's most overlooked masterpiece." Pitchfork included it on its 2022 list of the 25 best grunge albums of the 1990s. The band signed with Elektra later in 1992 and made Gentlemen there the following year.
