2016 XL Recordings Reissue CD

Radiohead's back catalog changed hands in April 2016, when XL Recordings acquired it from EMI and withdrew the unauthorized EMI reissues from streaming services. The catalog went back out the following month under XL's own numbers, and this disc is OK Computer from that run: catalog number XLCD781, a single CD in a jewel case, twelve tracks, 53 minutes and 27 seconds.

The sleeve is a collage assembled by Thom Yorke, credited as the White Chocolate Farm, with Stanley Donwood, whom Yorke had commissioned to keep a visual diary alongside the recording sessions; Yorke has said he did not feel confident in the music until he could see something to go with it. Donwood has put the blue-and-white palette down to trying to make something the color of bleached bone. The two stick figures shaking hands turn up in the liner notes and on the face of the disc itself, an image Yorke has explained as being about exploitation, someone being sold something they do not really want.

"Airbag," the opening track, is built on a few seconds of Philip Selway's drumming, sampled and reassembled on a Macintosh after the band heard DJ Shadow, and its words came from a magazine article titled "An Airbag Saved My Life." "Fitter Happier" is read by Fred, a synthesized voice from the Macintosh SimpleText application; Yorke wrote the text in about ten minutes during a bout of writer's block and later called it the most upsetting thing he had written. The band considered opening the album with it and decided the effect was off-putting, then spent two weeks settling the running order they did use.

"Lucky" is older than the sessions. Brian Eno commissioned Radiohead for The Help Album, a War Child charity record cut in a single day, and the band recorded the song with Nigel Godrich in five hours on September 4, 1995. Godrich went on to co-produce the whole album.

OK Computer has sold at least 7.8 million copies worldwide. In 2014 the Library of Congress added it to the National Recording Registry as culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. XL's expanded twentieth-anniversary edition, OKNOTOK 1997 2017, arrived in June 2017 with eight B-sides and three unreleased songs, and is a different release from this one.
