180 Gram 2LP Reissue From Music On Vinyl

This is the Music On Vinyl edition of Mr. Bungle's self-titled debut, catalog number MOVLP1201, pressed on 180 gram vinyl and made in the EU under license from Warner. The album's earlier vinyl issue fit everything onto a single LP, and Music On Vinyl's notes say that left it with a rather dull dynamic sound. Here the music is spread across three sides of two records, and the fourth side carries a laser etching in place of grooves. A 12-inch insert prints the lyrics.

The same barcode has covered more than one run. The first 2,000 copies in 2014 were individually numbered and pressed on purple vinyl, standard copies followed once those sold out, and a 2021 repress updated the copyright line on the labels. The vinyl color is not specified here.

Warner Bros. first released Mr. Bungle on August 13, 1991. The band recorded it at Different Fur in San Francisco across 1990 and 1991 and produced it with John Zorn, who also plays alto saxophone on "Love Is a Fist." David Bryson recorded and mixed the sessions, and Bob Ludwig mastered them. The sleeve credits the members under stage names, with Mike Patton as Vlad Drac and Trey Spruance as Scummy alongside Trevor Dunn, Clinton "Bar" McKinnon, Theo Lengyel and Danny Heifetz.

Dan Sweetman's cover painting first appeared in "A Cotton Candy Autopsy," a story from the comic series Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children. Three songs from the sessions were cut at the last minute, and a reworked "Platypus" surfaced four years later on Disco Volante. The opening track was first titled "Travolta" and became "Quote Unquote" on later pressings, the name it carries on this one.
