Translucent Ruby Vinyl 2LP, Rocktober 2025

This edition presses Mr. Bungle's California across two LPs of translucent ruby vinyl in a gatefold jacket. Rhino issued it on October 24, 2025 as part of Rocktober 2025, a run of 23 limited vinyl titles released each Friday from October 3 and sold only through select brick-and-mortar record stores.

The hype sticker on the jacket sets out what is new here: the audio is remastered, the program is sequenced across four sides for improved fidelity, and the bonus track "Gnosterces" closes side D. The same sticker identifies it as the first standalone North American vinyl reissue of the album since 2010.

California is the band's third studio album, first released by Warner Bros. on July 13, 1999 and produced by Mr. Bungle themselves. The lineup was Mike Patton, Trey Spruance, Trevor Dunn, Danny Heifetz and Clinton "Bar" McKinnon. Warner had scheduled it for June 8 and moved it back so it would not share a street date with the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Californication, also on the label. Dunn has recalled that the band recorded much of it in a rehearsal space Spruance had partly turned into a studio, spreading the rest across outside studios and engineers, with two 24-track tape machines and two ADAT machines linked together.

AllMusic's Steve Huey and Pitchfork both remarked on how unlikely it was that a band this uncommercial was recording for a major label. Avenged Sevenfold released a studio cover of "Retrovertigo" in 2017, and Dillinger Escape Plan guitarist Ben Weinman has credited the same song, heard nightly on the two bands' 1999 tour, as the inspiration for their 2005 single "Unretrofied."
