Panegyric's 200 gram pressing of the fortieth-anniversary stereo mix, mastered by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering from the original studio masters. The sleeve is single-pocket and comes with a lyric sheet and an inner sleeve printed with the rest of the King Crimson catalogue.

The record is sequenced in halves, and the sleeve names them rather than numbering them: a Left Side of song-form material and a Right Side of instrumental and experimental pieces, a split Fripp has described as the accessible and the excessive sides of the group. "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part III" closes the Right Side, picking up a sequence begun eleven years earlier.

Sessions ran from May to November 1983 across three studios — Arny's Shack in Poole, Marcus in London and Bearsville in Woodstock, New York — with the band producing. Adrian Belew sang and played guitar and synthesizer, Robert Fripp played guitar, synthesizer and Frippertronics, Tony Levin played bass, Chapman Stick and synthesizer, and Bill Bruford played acoustic and electronic drums.

It reached No. 30 in the United Kingdom and No. 58 on the Billboard 200. The quartet broke up later in 1984, leaving this as its final studio album, and Gang Starr sampled "Dig Me" on their 1989 debut.
