Solar Flare Hand-Poured Vinyl, Original 1976 Masters

Exciter Records cut this LP for the album's fiftieth anniversary from the original 1976 analog master tapes, which the label says sat in storage for decades before being restored and remastered for the release. Exciter describes the edition as mastered at half speed and produced in cooperation with Judas Priest. Every copy is pressed on hand-poured Solar Flare vinyl, so the color pattern runs differently through each record, and the first pressing ships in a vintage-style tip-on jacket.

The sides play in the order the band intended, opening with "Prelude" and ending with "Deceiver." That is the sequence printed on the back of the 1976 sleeve, which the record inside it did not follow: the original was cut with the sides reversed and began with "Victim of Changes." Joan Baez's "Diamonds and Rust," which Judas Priest recorded during the same sessions, was left off the album in 1976 and is not on this record.

Sad Wings of Destiny was Judas Priest's second album, released by Gull Records on March 26, 1976. "The Ripper" had appeared as a single seven days earlier, backed with "Island of Domination." Gull's recording budget for the album was 2,000 pounds. The band kept to one meal a day through the sessions and took outside work to get by, with Glenn Tipton gardening, K.K. Downing in a factory and Ian Hill driving a delivery van. Janus Records published and distributed the first American edition. Judas Priest signed to CBS for the record that followed, and breaking the Gull contract left the rights to their first two albums, demos included, with Gull.
