50th Anniversary Picture Disc

Here the 50th anniversary remaster is pressed as a single picture disc, Rhino catalog number RPD1 721382. Rick Griffin's artwork is printed into the vinyl itself: the hooded harvester with his scythe and armful of wheat on side A, and a sheaf of wheat with a crow on side B. A round die-cut window in the jacket lets the disc show through.

The audio is the same remaster used across the anniversary editions. Plangent Processes handled tape restoration and speed correction, David Glasser mastered it, and Grateful Dead archivist David Lemieux produced it for release. Chris Bellman cut the lacquers for this disc.

Griffin, a San Francisco artist close to the band, built the painting around a passage from the Book of Revelation and said he wanted to answer it with "an image of loving harvest." The title comes from the first line of "Here Comes Sunshine," which Robert Hunter wrote as a reference to the flood that swept away Vanport, Oregon.

The record was the Grateful Dead's sixth studio album and the first on their own Grateful Dead Records, released in October 1973. Drummer Bill Kreutzmann called it "Keith's coming out party," after the band's new keyboardist, Keith Godchaux. "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away" is his only song for the group as both writer and singer, and it was played live just six times.
