This is the 1974 United States quadraphonic issue of Sundown, Reprise MS4 2177, pressed at the Columbia Records plant in Santa Maria, California. It was released as a Quadradisc, the CD-4 discrete four-channel format, and the Quadradisc logo sits at the upper left of the front jacket.
The etched runouts read "\ MS4-2177 S 31759 - QUAD-1 1B T.H A7" on side A and "\ MS4-2177 S 31760 - QUAD-1 1A T.H A2" on side B, with T.H being the lacquer cutter's initials. Mastering is credited to Warner Bros. Recording Studios and the JVC Cutting Center. The tan Reprise labels carry the steamboat at top beside the Reprise logo in a red square box, with the matrix numbers 31,759 and 31,760. The spine carries the price code 0698, and the edition was issued with a company inner sleeve. One black disc.
The stereo album came out on Reprise as MS 2177 in January 1974; this four-channel edition carries its own catalogue number, MS4 2177, and was issued the same year. A CD-4 disc plays as stereo on an ordinary turntable, while hearing all four channels takes a CD-4 demodulator and a stylus suited to the format.
Sundown was Lightfoot's ninth studio album, and the only one of his records to reach No. 1 on the US pop chart.
