50th Anniversary Edition On Gold Nugget Vinyl With Trifold Jacket & Dossier Envelope

Partisan Records marks fifty years of Expensive Shit with this edition, pressed on gold nugget vinyl. The trifold jacket brings back elements of the original packaging alongside newly licensed photographs by Femi Bankole Osunla and John Collins. Inside is a dossier envelope holding a poster, a print and a newspaper clipping, and a metallic gold foil band wraps the whole package. Tarin Karimbux designed the edition.

The title track recounts an episode from 1974, when Nigeria was under military rule and police raids on Fela's Kalakuta compound were routine. In Partisan's account, an officer produced a joint during one raid and tried to plant it on Fela, who swallowed it. He was jailed while the police waited three days for a stool sample, and each night his cellmates swapped slop buckets so that the sample, when it was finally tested, came back clean. With no evidence, the police released him.

The album first came out in Nigeria in 1975 on Sounds Workshop, credited to Fela Ransome Kuti and Africa 70. Fela produced it at Arc Studio with engineer Demola Odebiyi. Each side holds one long piece: "Expensive Shit" runs a little over thirteen minutes, and "Water No Get Enemy," built on a Yoruba proverb about the power of nature, fills the second side at eleven. The band on the record includes Tony Allen on drums, Franco Aboddy on bass, Oghene Kologbo on tenor guitar, and Tunde Williams taking the trumpet solos.

Pitchfork ranked Expensive Shit No. 78 on its 2004 list of the top 100 albums of the 1970s, and Rolling Stone placed it at No. 402 on its 2020 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
