Black Vinyl LP with Digital Download Card

This is the standard black vinyl edition of Alagbon Close from Knitting Factory Records, catalog number KFR2011-1, issued in the US in 2015. It is a single LP with one side-long piece on each side, and it comes with a card for a digital download of the album.

The album was first issued in Nigeria in 1974 on the independent Jofabro label, credited to Fela Ransome-Kuti and Africa 70. Its title is an address: Alagbon Close in Lagos housed the headquarters of the Nigerian Criminal Investigation Department. According to Partisan Records, the title track deals with two police raids on Fela's house in April and May of 1974, after the second of which he was held at Alagbon Close for three days. The prisoners there called their shared cell the Kalakuta Republic, and once he was released, Fela gave his house the same name.

It was also the first Fela album with a sleeve designed by Ghariokwu Lemi, whose artwork the label credits as central to Afrobeat's message. The label's own notes describe the record as the first full flowering of Afrobeat, as music and as political philosophy, with the style's signature elements brought together on one record in a single balanced form.

Fela Kuti is regarded as the principal innovator of Afrobeat, which joins West African music with American funk and jazz. Through the 1970s his band was Africa '70, with Tony Allen as drummer and musical director. In 2026 he was inducted posthumously into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as an early influence.
