Black Vinyl LP with Printed Inner Sleeve and Digital Download

This is the single-LP vinyl reissue of Roforofo Fight, catalog number KFR2006-1, licensed from the Fela Anikulapo Kuti estate to Knitting Factory Records. It is pressed on black vinyl and comes with a printed inner sleeve that carries a black-and-white portrait of Fela, plus a digital download code. The jacket keeps the original Jofabro artwork, with the Lagos label's JILP 100 number on the front and JILP 1001 on the back. The reissue number sits beneath them with the line "Originally released 1972."

The center labels follow the Jofabro design too. They credit Fela Ransome Kuti and the Africa 70, list the language as Broken English, and give each side over to a single long track. "Roforofo Fight" fills side one. "Go Slow" fills side two, and its label times it at 17 minutes 25 seconds.

The album was recorded in Lagos and first issued in 1972 on Jofabro, a Nigerian EMI label. In the label's notes, the original release was spread across two vinyl albums, Music of Fela Volume One and Volume Two. Fela wrote every composition and produced the sessions himself, playing tenor and alto saxophone and singing. Behind him, Africa 70 had Tony Allen on drums, Tunde Williams on trumpet, Christopher Uwaifor on tenor saxophone, Lekan Animashaun on baritone saxophone, Segun Edo and Tutu Shorunmu on guitar, George Bruce on bass and James Abayomi on percussion. In Fela's catalog the record falls between Shakara and Afrodisiac.

Fela is widely credited as the principal innovator of Afrobeat, which brings West African music together with American funk and jazz. He sang in Pidgin English so that his songs could travel across a continent of many languages. In 2026 he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the early influence category, after two earlier nominations.
