Verve Acoustic Sounds Series 180g Black Vinyl LP in a Tip-On Gatefold Jacket

This edition of Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus belongs to the Acoustic Sounds Series, the Verve/UMe reissue line supervised by Chad Kassem. Ryan K. Smith mastered it at Sterling Sound from the original analog tapes, Quality Record Pressings pressed it on 180-gram vinyl, and it comes in an old-style tip-on gatefold jacket printed by Stoughton. The catalog number is B0033601-01.

Impulse! first issued the album in 1964 as A-54, with Bob Thiele producing and Bob Simpson engineering. It draws on two New York sessions from 1963: "I X Love" and "Celia" come from the January 20 dates that also produced The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady, and the rest was cut on September 20 with a different lineup that included Eric Dolphy, Booker Ervin, Jaki Byard and Walter Perkins.

Most of the program revisits earlier Mingus compositions under new names, scored by Bob Hammer for a large brass and saxophone ensemble. "II B.S." is "Haitian Fight Song," "Better Get Hit in Yo' Soul" is "Better Git It in Your Soul," "Theme for Lester Young" is "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," and "Hora Decubitus" grew out of "E's Flat, Ah's Flat Too." "Mood Indigo" is the Duke Ellington and Barney Bigard standard.
